The right size makes a rug look intentional. Too small and it floats; too large and the room feels crowded. Use these simple rules before you choose.
Living room
Aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every sofa and chair rest on it. In most living rooms that means 8 x 10 ft or 9 x 12 ft. In a smaller room, 6 x 9 ft or 5 x 8 ft works if the front legs still touch the rug.
Dining room
Chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out. Add about 60 cm (2 ft) on every side of the table: a six-seat table usually needs 8 x 10 ft or larger.
Bedroom
Under a queen bed, an 8 x 10 ft rug placed two-thirds under the bed frames it beautifully. For a king bed, consider 9 x 12 ft. Runners or 3 x 5 ft rugs on each side are a lighter option.
Entrances and corridors
Leave 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side of a hallway runner, and make sure doors can open freely over the pile.
Measure first
Mark the rug's outline on the floor with tape before you order. Need something in between? We make custom sizes.
