Knotted, tufted or kilim? Understanding how rugs are made

12 Oct 2026 · 1 min read · By Hand Carpets

Three ways of making a rug by hand — and what each one means for feel, durability and price.

All of our rugs are made by hand, but not in the same way. The technique changes how a rug feels underfoot, how long it lasts and what it costs.

Hand-knotted

Each knot is tied by hand around the warp threads of a loom, row after row. The result is a dense, durable pile with sharp pattern detail. Knotted rugs take the longest to make and can last for generations.

Hand-tufted

Yarn is punched through a backing cloth with a hand-held tool, then sheared to an even pile and backed. Tufted rugs are plush and are ideal for bold, contemporary designs at a lower price than knotted rugs.

Handwoven kilim

Kilims are flat-woven: the pattern is made by the weft threads themselves, with no pile. They are light, easy to move and full of graphic character — perfect for layering or for rooms with heavy furniture movement.

Which is right for you?

Choose knotted for heirloom quality, tufted for softness and modern colour, and kilim for a light, graphic look. Browse each in our rug collection.
